Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are strong and yet very conservative dental restorations that are often used when part of a tooth is missing or it is to big to be restored by a direct filling. These are also much more conservative than conventional crowns in which the tooth is prepared to a little stub.

This keeps your tooth stronger because less tooth is removed.

Inlays and onlays can be made from resin, porcelain, and gold. The resins and porcelains are tooth colored so that they blend in with your natural tooth and are stronger than directly placed resins (composite fillings). The margins are invisible, they do not need to be placed below the gumline. This is kinder and healthier for the gums. Resin and porcelain inlays and onlays have much more wear resistance versus directly placed fillings, and often less expensive that a conventional crown. They are also bonded to the teeth to create a tight superior fit and restore the tooth to nearly its original strength.

Gold inlays and onlays are considered to be the best type of restoration that you can have, they are strong and durable, and like resin and porcelain inlays and onlays, are "kind" to the opposing teeth. The color of the gold restoration is often a consideration and with the beauty and proven record of resin and porcelain restorations these types of restorations are becoming more popular than gold.
